A strong domestic opening by Thor : Ragnarok at $121 million along with a dazzling opening in China
Thor: Ragnarok, the Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe’s long awaited movie, has gone off to a stellar holiday weekend start after raking in more than $120 million in the domestic markets. The movie continues to go strong and is still attracting movie buffs across the globe. The holiday season also saw A Bad Mom’s Christmas deliver around $20 million in its 5-day run but a lot remains to be seen in the coming days. The opening weekend saw a revenue influx of more than $166 million by the top twelve openings for the period. These numbers are a good improvement over the previous weeks’ numbers but are down as compared to the last years’ during the same weekend.
The much-anticipated Thor: Ragnarok toppled the Spiderman Homecoming movie release earlier this year as the biggest opening of the year from the Marvel Cinematic Universe even though it had raked in a massive $117 million opening revenue. Going by the trend normally, the movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe normally give a domestic run of 2.72x based on the opening weekend. And by these numbers, it should rake in $330 million even if it manages to hold on to the average numbers. However, going by the strongly favourable reviews received and the full theatres the movie got on the opening, a much better revenue is expected.
Success in China
What is one of the most important feathers in Thor: Ragnarok’s cap is the fact that with gross earnings of $55 million in China, it has had the biggest November opening ever in China for any film. So, the future only will tell about the additional records that this movie is set to break once it is released on more screens around the world.
