The Greta Gerwig directed movie ‘Lady bird’ starring Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Letcalfe has been launched on four screens across Los Angeles and New York combined and surpassing all expectations it has had the best limited opening of the year with $375,612. The average for the four-screen opening has been $93,903 per screen which is much more than any other limited opening film which opened this year.
The grand opening has been due to word-of-mouth publicity due to the universal appeal that the film has which has successfully garnered good reviews from both the young as well as the older audiences. The film has got 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the top film critic website and is being highly looked forward to by the international audience.
The film was released strategically at the right places – the Arclight Hollywood and Landmark in Los Angeles and AMC Loews Lincoln Square and the Angelika Film Centre at New York – to attract the most important masses. The distributor of the film has plans to have a nationwide launch over the Thanksgiving holiday and wants to expand to the top markets before that during the coming weekend.
The movie dislodged ‘The Big Sick’ from the top position in a limited platform launch this year to secure a good lead in terms of earnings. While Roadside Attractions opened ‘the Big Sick’ to $421,577 at five locations, the average per screen was still about $9,000 short of the per screen average scored by ‘Lady Bird’. The film eventually did a little over $42 million in the domestic markets.
Lady bird brings enthusiasm
So, there is a lot of enthusiasm amongst the film fraternity for this big release and it remains to be seen whether the film will have a better run than its other rivals who were released in a limited platform earlier this year.
